Materiality of Drawing/Thinking
The value of slow arrival: bodily gesture | spatial mode | response time
This is a call for contributions on the materiality of drawing. Submissions may take the form of visual or moving image texts, written articles or combination texts with words and images exploring the making and the interpretation of drawings and in particular, the materiality of the drawing process as a conceptual and physical activity.
The practice of drawing and the study of drawing practice are particularly interesting at present in terms of rapidly changing professional methods, digital and technological developments and the challenges of practice-led research investigations. SMT is interested in theoretical, professional and pedagogic approaches that explore and explain the wide variety of drawing practices in art, design and other contexts. It is a fascinating and important contemporary issue for artists and theorists. Contributions may challenge or refocus current ideas on drawing as perception; the eloquence of cumulative resolution; evolutionary coherence; meaning and interpretation; notions of dexterity; the value of attentiveness; ambiguity; progressive logic and sustained uncertainty in relation to drawing as a material practice.

Open Call for Contributions
This is an open call for ideas, contributions and thematic suggestions from all artists, designers and researchers interested in the materiality of creative practice. Design and creative technologies, creative and cultural industries and artistic practices are all characterised by the significance of material considerations in the emergent processes of experimentation, development, application and production. Research in these areas is usually practice-led and the growth of postgraduate courses worldwide has led to an exciting new wave of contemporary academic interest in research orientations and approaches. In particular, the advancement of practice-led design research is dependent on a shared understanding of the scope and significance of diverse approaches currently being differentiated and discussed in the academic discourses of a variety of fields and disciplines. This work on new methodological perspectives and the material thinking that is characteristic of much design, technological and creative/artistic production will inevitably contribute to the advancement of art and design disciplines, improved practices at postgraduate level and overall, a robust research discipline.
