Message from the Editor

Studies in Material Thinking is a project that I hope will become a catalyst for better trans-disciplinary understanding of the paradigm shifts that are occurring in art and design research practice and education. There is a growing need within the postgraduate community and broader artistic and technological research fields for more thorough explanations of creative method and more comprehensive analysis of creative thinking, material process and innovation. Within the postgraduate sector we increasingly speak of the ‘triple crisis’ of praxis, representation and legitimation and everywhere we hear versions of collegial concern about the impact of this perceived crisis on creative practice in the academy.

This is an open invitation for all who have an interest in practice-based research, teaching and learning, questioning assumptions and thinking through poesis and praxis to contribute to this discussion, seek out significant issues, contemplate the differences between our individual professional perspectives and hone our collective understanding of issues around material thinking.

The journal is currently seeking members for an international committee of associate editorial advisors. We welcome suggestions in that regard and nominations of colleagues whose research interests and experience would strengthen the project.

Readers are invited to join this discussion and reflection. Please feel free to:

- Contact the editor or authors directly (email addresses supplied) to discuss the ideas presented
- Write a brief critical responses to these articles for inclusion in a forthcoming readers response section
- Submit previously unpublished manuscripts for consideration
- Send suggestions for improving the journal to the Editor

The next issue of Studies in Material Thinking will be published on line late 2007. There is no deadline for submissions. Draft manuscripts can be submitted to the Editor at any time.

I would like to point out that this first volume has come together in a collegial way through a process of peer support and comment, not blind review. Subsequent volumes will be treated in a more conventional manner when the editorial process and an advisory board have been decided. Future occasional volumes may take a thematic form or they may emerge more organically from the topics and issues submitted.

I would like to thank all the initial contributors for their interest in this new journal, including those who wanted to submit work but were unable to meet the tight deadline for this first volume. We look forward to your contributions in forthcoming volumes.
